Merry Christmas!

Hey Everyone!
So winter semester is officially over. I can't believe how quickly it went by. I seriously feel as if it just started a few weeks ago. But now it's over and done with. The last day of Co-op as always was a little Crazy with everyone racing around trying to get last minute preparations done for showcase on Saturday. I actually think that having showcase on a Saturday was kind of nice because it gave everyone a chance to get in a little extra last minute practice before the big event. The students and families at Cornerstone Co-op were in good spirits on Tuesday happily getting everything ready for tuesday. The night of showcase was a cold one and everyone braved the cold to come out and see all of the amazing talents at our Co-op. From the Choir to the Sign Language Students to the dramas and the art pieces displayed the entire night was a sucess! We had a huge turn out for showcase. So many in fact that we had to drag extra chairs into the sanctuary to seat everyone! Everything went very smoothly and the night was a spectaular event. I believe that everyone really had fun. Afterwards All the families went out to eat together for some last food and fellowship before the Christmas season and the new semester. I hope everyone who attended had an amazing night and I can't wait to see everyone next semester! When The Cornerstone Gazette will once again deliver all of the Co-op news each week! : ) Have a Merry Christmas Cornerstone Co-op! Happy New Years! And I will see you next semester! : )

After Showcase
Written by Songbird

As tradition in the past, students and families alike will be gathering together for food and fellowship after showcase this Saturday (the 10th) at CiCi's Pizza on Rt. 256 in Pickerington. This is a great time to hang out, laugh with your friends and family, and to spend time together one more time until the next semester begins. CiCi's pizza is graciously keeping it's doors open late so that we can come and eat after showcase. Keep in mind however that this is not a Co-op event simply a social gathering and everyone is responsible for there own children. I hope that you all have a great last day of this semester and I can't wait to see you all Saturday!

Workers Needed!

Written by Momitor

Showcase set up and tear down is a lot of work, and we need you!

Here is what we need:
Set up crew: (4:00-5:30?)
We need strong people to move chairs from various parts of the church and set them up in the sanctuary. We will also be setting up tables in the narthex. We need a minimum of 8 people. More would be better. We have a short time to get this accomplished.

2 Door Guards: (6:00-6:30) This is just to keep people out of the sanctuary during practice.

2 Greeters: (6:30-7:00)

Tear Down Crew: (After Showcase)
We need individuals and families who will commit to stay after Showcase until the work is completely done. The more workers we have, the faster we will finish.

Please let me know how you can help:

Showcase Reminder

Showcase is on Saturday December 10th. It starts at 7:00pm and the doors open at 6:00pm. Showcase is always a lot of fun, and a great event for the whole family.

?? After Showcase Gathering ??

Written by Momitor

For the past several years, many families have gathered to eat together after Showcase. The restaurant stayed open late for us. This is not an official co-op sponsored event, and it is not planned by the committee. If families are interested in a large gathering, some parent will need to take leadership, make the arangements, and communicate this to the other member families.

What Are You Thankful For?
Written by Songbird =(<)>

As we are rapidly approaching Thanksgiving I wanted to ask not only students but also parents, and teachers what they are thankful for this holiday season.

“I'm thankful for my God. If you think about it, anything else that you would be thankful for (family, friends and such) God has blessed you with. I'm thankful for music, and that people have the ability to make music.” - @ l ; n @

“I am thankful for getting on the other side of cancer. I am thankful for Co-op!” - Anonymous

“I'm superbly thankful for my siblings and their amazing influence on me throughout my life, and the constant flow of respect in my family that goes in every direction. I am thankful for my parents sacrificing themselves to prove their love for me and my siblings by homeschooling us. I am thankful for my grandpa being able to live with my family in good health, being an anchor of encouraging love and wisdom for my whole family. I am thankful for Mrs. Fisher's unbelievable level of humility and talent when it comes to teaching music. I am also thankful for Mrs. Park and her incredible patience and care when teaching Phys. Ed. Most of all, however, I am thankful for the Lord taking the reigns in my life, and not allowing me to stray from Him but encouraging me to pursue a relationship with Him, which I intend to do with fervor all of my life.” -Anonymous

“I am thankful for intimacy in relationship with Christ. His sufficiency in all things, hope in all things, and the promise of victory for all who endure.” - Anonymous

“I'm thankful that God had opened up the door to Ethiopia. A few weeks ago I was able to go on a missions trip to my cousin's home country of Ethiopia. I made some amazing friends and had the most awesome experiences. That is what I'm most thankful for.” - Anonymous

“I am thankful for everyone of my children and how different they all are, but they still can get along. (most of the time!)” - Anonymous

“I am so thankful for my family and friends who are always there for me. I am thankful for Co-op and for all the amazing teachers and friends that I have met here. I am also thankful for my amazing church. But most of all I am thankful for my AMAZING God because without Him I would be nothing.” - Anonymous

“Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!”

Let's Talk Turkey
Written by Songbird

Since Thanksgiving is right around the corner I thought you all might enjoy reading some fun facts about turkeys! : )

1) Turkey is not only a traditional choice for Thanksgiving but also for Christmas!

2) Turkeys are native to North and Central America.

3) Domestic Turkeys cannot fly because they are bred and raised to be heavy so they can't take flight.

4) Wild turkeys can fly short distances at 55 miles per hour! They can run at speeds of 25 miles per hour!

5) Wild turkeys live in hardwood forests with grassy areas. They roost in trees.

6) About 45 millions turkeys are consumed every Thanksgiving. The average Thanksgiving turkey weighs about 15 pounds. Approximately 20 million turkeys are the main course at Christmas dinner.

Hey Everyone!
I hope that you all are having a great day so far. Sadly there is no Co-op today due to the church being used for voting. However today you get a day off! : ) and it's beautiful outside today! : ) The weather is really nice and warm for a change. So on your day off you should go on a picnic or go to a park or hang out in the back yard. Enjoy this beautiful day that God has given us! : ) Since you have this nice week break it would be a great time to get all that homework done that you have been putting off. Fall Fun Facts!
Written by Songbird

Since we are now well into autumn the leaves are changing and beginning to fall from the trees, Harvest parties are beginning, along with trick or treating, and carving pumpkins! I thought to get us all into the mood for fall I would share some interesting facts about fall with you.

1) The season autumn is also known as fall because of the obvious reason, the leaves on many trees die and fall to the ground.

2) This year (2011) fall began on September 23rd and will end on December 21st

3) Leaf color comes from pigments. The three different colors of pigments are chlorophyll (green), Carotenoid (Yellow, Orange, and Brown), and Anthocyanin (Red). Chlorophyll is the most important of the three because without the chlorophyll in leaves, trees wouldn't be able to use sunlight to produce food. Chlorophyll and Carotenoid are in leaf cells all the time during growing season. But the Chlorophyll covers the Carotenoid and that's why summer leaves are green and not yellow or orange. Most Anthocyanins are produced only in autumn, and only under certain conditions. Not all trees can make Anthocyanins.

4) When the days begin to get shorter trees respond to the decreasing amount of sunlight by producing less and less chlorophyll. Eventually, a tree will stop producing chlorophyll. When that happens the carotenoid already in the leaves can show through and the leaves become yellow, orange, and brown.

5) During warm days leaves can produce a lot of sugar. But during cool nights the cold temperatures prevents the sugar sap from flowing through the leaf veins and down into the branches and trunk. Anthocyanins are produced as a form of protection. They allow the plant to recover nutrients in the leaves before they fall off. And this helps prepare the tree for the next growing season. Anthocyanins give leaves bright shades of red.

Fall Fashion
By Songbird

As the seasons change so do your clothes. Most people get depressed when summer is over because that means no more flip flops, tank tops, and shorts. When fall comes most people think that their clothes have to be bulky and boring. However, it is possible to stay both warm and fashionable this fall. As always jeans are a must to stay in trend for any season. They come in millions of shades and keep you warm and looking your best. The most popular jeans for 2011 are definitely jeggings, Skinny jeans, and flared jeans for girls. Dark to medium hues are all the rage. Also brightly colored pants are a very popular choice this fall for girls. For guys both the skinny jeans as well as straight leg are what is in style. Black, gray, and dark blue washes are definitely some of the top colors this fall. Moving up, popular shirts this season for girls will be found in many different prints and flowing fabrics. Popular patterns this season are polka dots, ethnic prints, lace, and plaid. For guys plaid is definitely also a huge fashion trend this fall as well as graphic t-shirts. For foot ware obviously Converse High tops are one of the most trendy styles for your feet. A close second for girls are the Ugg boots, followed by decorative flats, and ankle booties. A close second for guys would be Vans skate board shoes. For an extra layer of warmth graphic zip up hoodies keep you warm and looking cool. Or you can pick up a chunky patterned sweater at most any store. (Stripes are very popular for sweaters this season) Girls fringed pattern scarves are very popular this autumn and they can throw on a crochet beret for a cute but warm look. Guys can try a billed knit hat or a knit beanie for an extra layer of warmth. Also for both guys and girls pea coats or toggle coats are the most popular jacket of this season. I hope these easy tips keep you warm this autumn while looking cool!

Favorite Things About Co-op

Written by Songbird

Weare so blessed to be able to attend such an AMAZING Christian Co-op. There are so many benefits to attending Co-op, and I asked some students about what their favorite things about attending Cornerstone Co-op are.

"Being able to go to Co-op is a great privilege. It's very amazing to find a Christian Co-op where the teachers focus on God and do a great job of encouraging. I enjoy spending time with other homeschoolers and socializing." - @ l ; n @

"I love getting to see all of my friends each Tuesday at Co-op! It's a blessing to be able to learn new things in a safe Christian enviornment. I also love ASL. Mrs. Williams rocks! Though I don't always appreciate all the homework she gives us...: )" - Anonymous

"I love being able to talk to people of all ages here! It is so cool to get to talk to someone my age on minute, and the next to a mom or a younger student! I also enjoy the classes, and I'm working on appreciating all the homework. : )" - Anonymous

"I love going to Co-op because I have met some of my best friends there, and have some amazing teachers who have such Godly testimonies. I love doing all the experiments in science, and learning how to sign and sing! I've gotten some memories from this place!" -Anonymous

"My favorite thing about Co-op is getting to see and talk to people that I wouldn't otherwise get to see. I would have to add, though, that my Co-op day wouldn't be complete without my marvelous ASL class and the always enjoyable choir! (The only time it's not enjoyable is when I haven't practiced enough : ( ....Oops! you didn't just read that!) Anyway, I am very thankful for Co-op, and the committee that helps make it possible (And everybody else. : ) ). - Anonymous

"I love being able to attend Cornerstone Co-op. It's such a blessing to be able to come to an awesome Christian Co-op where I can take many different classes that I normally wouldn't be able to take by myself at home. My favorite thing about Co-op is spending time with my friends, ASL class, Art, and Choir." - Anonymous

Lions and Tigers and Bears Oh My!!

Written by Songbird

Last Tuesday at around 6:00pm over forty eight wild animals including lions, tigers, bears, wolves, cheetahs, camels, and giraffes escaped a private animal perserve in Zanesville, Ohio and were wandering loose in the city. The city was placed under lockdown. the towns residents were advised to stay inside until the animals were rounded up, and several schools across the area canceled classes on the Wednesday. This proves just another reason that it's amazing to be a homeschooled student. You do not have to worry about being attacked by wild animals on the way to school!

The ball is for age fourteen and up and light refreshments will be served. Appropriate evening attire is requested. Dance instruction is courtesy of Scottish Country Dancing and Traditional Music. There is limited space which will fill up quickly so you need to send in your registration soon! The dance will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 7:00-10:00pm. There will be a dance practice from 12:00-3:00pm that afternoon. Tickets are $30.00per person by November 19th and $35.00 after November 19th. I have attended the Celtic Ball several times and it is a great night full of fun that everyone can enjoy. All attenders should read the Celtic Ball invitation in order to understand the rules and dress codes fully. Remember the Celtic Ball is NOT a Co-op run dance. It is a Christian Homeschool dance which is fully independent from Co-op. If you have questions you can e-mail Rebekah Richendollar at thecelticball@gmail.com

SAT ACT

Written by Songbird

Once you are in high school and getting close to graduation, you will start preparing to take the SAT ACT tests so that you can become accepted into different colleges. Like public school students homeschoolers have to take the SAT and ACT tests at approved testing sites. These sites and the dates of the tests can be found on the internet. Different colleges accept different tests, so you will either have to take one or both of the tests to be accepted in the college of your choice. There are multiple sections of the test which you must take and it takes several hours to complete. There are portions on Math, writing, and several other subjects. The tests seem quite challenging, but if you are well prepare you can exceed above your expectations.

Spirit Wear

Written by Songbird

This year the yearbook class has come up with a great idea and is sponsoring a design contest for the annual Co-op T-shirt and sweatshirt sale. All designs must be only one color and can be either hand drawn or designed with computer software. All entries must be submitted by October 25th. (There is a box in the Narthex for the entries.) The winner of the contest will be announced on November 1st and will be treated to pizza for lunch. Orders will be taken from November 1st -15th. The shirts will be available for pick up on the last day of winter semester. These shirts would make great Christmas presents for siblings, family, or friends. If you have any questions about the contest, you can talk to the yearbook adviser, or a yearbook staff member. I can't wait to see what design wins!

Food Pantry

Written by Songbird

You may or may not be aware that the church runs a food pantry out of it's building. Recently I heard that there was an article in the newspaper describing their increased need for donations. In the past our Co-op has had a food drive for their food pantry. Once again our Co-op has the great opportunity to bless others in need by donating food to this pantry. Someone spoke to one of the ladies running the pantry and got a list of their current needs: deodorant, toothbrushes, toilet paper, canned juices and fruits, small jars of condiments (ketchup, mustard), canned meat, canned soup, canned pumpkin pie mix (not canned pumpkin), evaporated milk, and pie crust mix. There will be a large box labled FOOD DRIVE in the enclosed foyer across from the free table where you can place your donations. The box will be available for donations for the next three weeks until October 18th and then the last three weeks of fall semester starting November 22nd which is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Recycling Reminder

Written by @ l ; n @

When you are done with your pop cans or water bottles at Co-op, please remember that there are containers in the Narthex for recycling. They are located right in fron tof the trash cans to make it even easier for you to recycle. This is both helpful and considered being green.

Homeschooler With A Job

Written by Songbird

There are many benefits to being homeschooled. Such as, being able to sleep in, flexible hours, and doing school on the couch in your pajamas. But being a worsking homeschooler has a lot of benefits as well. I asked some students from Cornerstone Co-op about what they think the benefits of being a working homeschooler are.

"Hello!

Being a homeschooler allows me to work during the week, and save money for college." - Anonymous

"One benefit to homeschooling and having a job is the obvious - you can usually work during school hours. A downside to that is that you then have to juggle getting schoolwork done, and getting your work done. Another negative element is that you will probably be working on your school later in the day and will most likely be more tired." - Anonymous

"Being homeschooled makes working a lot easier. I can be really flexible with my schedule, so whenever my boss needs me he can schedule me. I just move my schoolwork around to accommodate my work schedule. This means more money saved for college, a car, and other things that I might need in the future." - Anonymous

"I love being homeschooled and especially love being a homeschooler with a job. When you are homeschooled you can get more hours and are flexible in your work hours because you can work your schooling around work." - Anonymous

"I am so thankful that I am homeschooled! I love the fact that it gives me the flexibility that allows me to work. Because of that, I get to work more hours than the typical highschooler and have moved to a higher position sooner than I expected!" - Anonymous

Make Sure To Follow The Rules!

Written by @ l ; n @

Parents and teachers are a very important part of Co-op. We couldn't have classes without teachers, and they put a lot of time and effort into teaching us and trying to make learning fun and interesting for us here at Co-op. We are also very grateful for the parents who help teach and do other various activities to help out in general at Co-op. We don't express how much we appreciate our teachers and parent helpers nearly as often as we should. So this is just to say thank you for everything you do for us and for simplu being so amazing! THANKS!!!!!

Movie Review: Tangled

Written by Songbird

The movie Tangled begins with the evil Mother Gothel who is growing very old. However, in her travels she finds a magic flower which can heal and keep her young forever. Selfishly wanting to stay young forever, Mother Gothel hides the flower keeping it to her self. One day the kingdom's queen is about to have a baby but she gets very sick. So the townspeople decided to search for the magic flower so it could heal the queen. When the townspeople find the flower, they take it to the queen and she becomes well and gives birth to a baby girl named Rapunzel. Growing old once again Mother Gothel searches for the magic flower to take it back as her own . However, while searching the castle, she finds that Rapunzel's hair now has the power that the flower once had. So Mother Gothel kidnaps the child and raises her as her own daughter in a tower far away from the castle. Rapunzel grew to be age eighteen thinking that she was Mother Gothel's daughter and never cut her hair because then the magic would be gone forever. On Rapunzels eighteenth birthday she tells Mother Gothel that she dreams of adventure and of seeing the flying lanterns which light the night sky every year on her birthday. Mother Gothel, desperate to stay young forever, tells Rapunzel of a horrible world outside of her tower to scare her. However, once day when Mother Gothel was away a young handsome thief named Flynn Ryder climbed into Rapunzel's tower which sets off a whole chain of events. Rapunzel hides his satchel from him and refuses to give it back until he takes her out of the tower to see the floating lanterns. A long journey begins, and throughout the story Rapunzel and Flynn/Eugene begin to fall in love. Rapunzel discovers that she is the lost princess, and that Mother Gothel only wanted her for her magic hair. Mother Gothel doesn't want to grow old, so she plans to take Rapunzel away with her forever and sets Flynn up to kill him. Rapunzel promises that she will willingly go with Mother Gothel if she was allowed to save Flynn's life but Flynn cuts Rapunzel's hair off before she can heal him so that Mother Gothel wouldn't want to take her away. And with one snip her hair is short and the magic is gone. Immediately, Mother Gothel begins to grow old againas soon as Rapunzel's hair is cut and she falls out of the tower. Flynn survives, and he and Rapunzel go and tell the King and Queen that she is the lost princess. Thw whole town rejoiced at the news of the princess's return, and Rapunzel and Flnn got married and lived happily every after. I couldn't wait to see the movie Tangled and saw it as soon as it came out in theaters. And I have to say that the movie did not let me down. It is a very funny romantic comedy with strong points that everyone should have a dream and pursue it. It's a very beautiful and well done movie which is sure to delight the whole family!

Movie Review: Marmaduke

Written by Songbird

The movie Marmaduke features a large Great Dane who just wants to fit in with the other dogs around him. When Marmaduke's owner, Phil Winslow, gets a job in California as a marketing director of an organic pet food business along with a company car, it seems like the perfect time for the whole family to move. So Phil, his wife Debbie, his two kids Barbara and Brian, their cat Carlos, and Marmaduke pack up and head off to start a brand new life. All Marmaduke wants is to find some new friends who would accept him for who he is at the dog park they moved by. He is immediately accepted by the "Mutts" (MAizy, Raisin, and Giuseppe) at the dog park, but the "Pedigrees" refuse to accept any dog who is not up to their standards. Marmaduke is obsessed with being accepted and catching the eye of a pedigree collie named Jesebel so that he is willing to do anything to make the other dogs accept him. So much that he loses his friends who really cared about him. While Marmaduke is getting himself into trouble, Phil is not listening to his kids, Brian and Barbara, who are becoming really unhappy with the move to California. MAizy helps Marmaduke become accepted into the pedigree group, however, once he is accepted, he begins to ignore her compleatly and instead befriends Jezebel. Throughout the movie Marmadke finally realizes hat he is not being kind to his friends, and that everyone should be treated equally no matter if they are a mutt or a pedigree. He goes back and becomes freinds again with Maizy, Raisin, and Giuseppe. Phil finally realizes that he needs to listen to his kids and not be so obsessed with his job. And the whole movie brings the family closer together. Marmaduke is a story or courage, friendship, loyalty, honestly, accepting others, and dealing with your mistakes. I was skeptical when I started the movie Marmaduke however, I found it to be a hilarious, heartwarming, family friendly movie, which the whole family can enjoy.

Summer Is Officially Over

Written by @ l ; n @

Summer is full of various activities, some things I really enjoy in the summer are swimming (plus, there's no school! : -) ) and plenty of time to read, draw and listen to/make music. But not it's time to get back into the swing of the regular school year. And, of course, that means back to Co-op! :-)

We SURVIVED! Synopsis Of The First Day Of Co-op

Written by Songbird

Wow, we have officially now entered this semester of Co-op. We have had our first week already under our belts. The first day of Co-op was a beautiful day. The sun was shining, and there was a cool breeze. It was what I consider perfect back to school weather. You know it's a Co-op when you arrive and see a sea of minivans scattered all throughout the parking lot. But once in side Co-op is a very busy place. Students and teachers alike were dashing to their classes and catching up with old friends in the hall ways for as long as they could before they had to get to where they needed to be. Students went from class to class all throughout the day enjoying learning about the many things that they weill accomplish this semester. I think that the first day of Co-op went really well and also was a lot of fun. I am anticipating great things happening at Cornerstone Co-op this semester!

School's In Session:

Written by Songbird

Wow, is it just me or did the summer seem to go by really quickly? I had a great summer working, going on vacation, and hanging out with my friends. But as the cold breezes begin to set in and the leaves start to change to golden, copper, and red it's very obvious to all students that a summer full of fun in the sun is over and it's time to go buy new clothes for the fall and school supplies. Some people love this time of year where you return to school once again for another year of learning, making new friends, and homework. However, some people dread this time of year wishing that they could go to some beach to try to soak in a bit more of summer before the long school year begins once again. I enjoy the summer, but the autumn is my favorite season of all. Yes, at times I wish I didn't have to be doing school so soon, but there are so many things about the autumn that I love. Not only is autumn the time for school to begin but it's also the time that the Cornerstone Co-op resumes. And when Co-op resumes the Cornerstone Gazette resumes as well. I am so excited to be working on the Cornerstone Gazette this semester once again. We have an amazing staff of writers and brain stormers, and photographers all wrokgint heir hardest to make this Gazette the best it can possibly be. We cannot wait to print new issues for you all to enjoy each and every week. I am so excited to be writing to you all again in this brand neew semester full of amazing and exciting things at Cornerstone Go-op. I am anticipating awesome things happening this semester, and I can't wait to share them all with you! This summer was great, but school is now in session and so is the Cornerstone Gazette!

Reminder:

Written by Fishy

It is important to remember to be on time to your classes each week. This is a courtesy, both for your teacher and also for your other classmates. In fact, so you do not arrive to your classes late, it is a very good idea to try to arrive at your classroom a couple minutes beforehand if you are able.

Park Days:

Written by Songbird

All throughout this summer whether in rain or shine, dedicated students of Cornerstone Co-op journeyed to Blacklick Park for one of the highlights of the summer, Co-op park days. Students gathered together at the park to talk, go for walks, hang out with friends, play games, eat lunch, and just be together! The park days were a success and lots of fun. Thank you to everyone who attended park days in making them so awesome.

Spring Dance Went Well!

Hey Everyone!
OK so the spring dance went really well. The theame this year was Holly Wood Premire. It was alot of fun we had it at a different church this year so it was different in that way as well but it went really well. People had a lot of fun. There were not a whole lot of people there this year but I think that's because there were so many seniors last year and the year before hopefully we will have more people attend at next years dance. If you were there comment below and tell me what you liked and didn't like about this years dance.
Have a great week everyone! : )

Spring Dance

Hey Everyone!
So Yesterday was the set up for the spring dance. First thanks to everyone who showed up to lend a hand setting up and getting ready for the much anticipated dance. But preparations for the dance went really well. There was a small but hard working crew who showed up to prepare the building. When we finished decorating the whole building looked beautiful. I can't wait for the dance and I hope you are all able to attend. See ya then.
